Ups and downs
Another image from a trip to North Yorkshire. Saltburn pier at low tide,Constructed in 1867 it is 1500 feet long. The cliff hoist was constructed in 1870,it descends 120 feet and is poward by a water counterbalance which is emptied and refilled.
We have only ever been up there in Winter when it is not working . The pier felt to us a bit flimsy, on our first visit the sea was very rough, each time a wave came in you could feel the pier vibrate from the impact.
