Binary System - Eric Brown

I like Eric Brown a lot and was looking forward to reading this as he's not published very much SF recently.

Sadly, while I more or less enjoyed it, it was rather pedestrian and much of it seemed like a travelogue. Following a terrible accident at a space gate, a young woman is stranded on a distant planet with no rescue expected. But, for all her troubles, she soon makes friends with some of the good locals, while fleeing the evil ex-starfaring bad locals. And she has an implant which translates everything and doles out handy advice!

Other human survivors are soon found although they seem bent on denying her key information they have which will assist them all greatly. But it all turns out well.

In fact, better than could be conceived at the beginning of the book! Fairly simplistic plot and an almost complete lack of conflict beyond 'goodies & baddies' except for the rather forced situation between her and the other two humans... She seems great at dealing with her initial seemingly hopeless situation (once she's decided against suicide!) and her subsequent adventures among the aliens but, once she's back in touch with other humans (who technically outrank her) she seems too trusting and unwilling to query obvious lies she's told by them.
