China - 南巡 - Going South I - Yangzhou 扬州

These are the memories of our lengthy tour of the Yangzi River Delta (扬子江） enjoying the delights of the "Hu" (户) life & culture. Following the steps of the Manchu Emperors, Kangxi (康熙皇帝）& his more famous grandson Qianlong (乾隆皇帝）, we trace & taste their steps across several provinces such as Jiangsu （江苏）, Zhejiang （浙江）& of course modern-day Shanghai （上海市）.
Out of all the busy & compolitan centres along the Yangzi, Yangzhou (扬州市） looks like a small town that has recently begun to prosper. Its central commercial street is lined with various restaurants, teahouses, and barber's shops, rather than skyscrapers and modern shopping malls. Despite 300 years of a rich merchantile history, few local people are willing to work outside Yangzhou, and those obliged to leave their hometown in order to work return as soon as they have made their fortune.
