Fish Gem 1954.592

This small, delicate fish was made of rock crystal. It is 1 3/8 x 2 15/16 inches and is from Syria or Asia Minor and dates to the 3rd or 4th century CE. Early Christians had to hide their faith, and fish came to signify Jesus. The Greek word for fish, ICHTHYS, is an acronym for the Greek phrase Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter which in English means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

It was purchased from the J. H. Fund, Accession Number 1954.592, is in the public domain and can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 104 or online at www.clevelandart.org/art/1954.592.
