Sarcophagus 1928.856_web

This sarcophagus, made of Greek marble is from about 100-125 CE, and measures 82 11/16 inches overall. It is from the Roman High Empire Era and is a beautifully sculpted and preserved depiction of the tragic figure Orestes. Orestes kills his mother and her lover after discovering they had killed his father Agamemnon. He then goes to atone for his sins at the Delphian shrine of Apollo. The sarcophagus reflects the high culture of the Roman patrician who probably was buried in it.

It was a gift of the John Huntington and Polytechnic Trust, Accession Number 1928.856, is in the public domain, and can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 103, or online at www.clevelandart.org/art/1928.856.
