Female Figurine DP278357

Cycladic Marble Female Figure

This marble female figure, 14 5/8 inches high, is from the Early Cycladic II Period, 2700 – 2600 BCE, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art website. It was purchased from the Fletcher Fund in 1934, is in the public domain, has the accession number 34.11.3, and can be seen in The Met Fifth Avenue Gallery 151 or online at www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/253423.

According to the Met website, this graceful figure was probably found with a marble bowl and a fragment of a terracotta offering vessel. It has the crossed arms across the abdomen that is typical of the female figures of this time, but the belly does not protrude, the legs are slender, the neck is exaggerated and the head very stylized. The feet are pointing downward, as is also typical of sculptures of this time, so the figure cannot stand by itself.
