In March 2019 Jakarta’s first subway opened, part of a larger mass-rail transit network, and money has also poured into Indonesia’s highway system. While inaugurating a newly expanded section of the Trans Java toll road, Widodo claimed it would help people reach their destinations faster and encourage tourism. But none of this seemed to help Irsyad get back home to Dieng and visit his parents from Jakarta where he studies design. “It took 16 hours by bus”, he says unenthusiastically.
