According to Alan R. Hirsch, MD, and Neurological Director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, the smell of Good & Plenty candy subconciously triggers sexual arousal in women.
I always found this connection amusing and loaded with interesting connotations. The juxtaposition of the words "Sex," "Good," and "Plenty," is a coincidence too powerful (and humorous) to ignore. Another curious discovery was the design of the Good & Plenty package. When the boxes are arranged in a grid with every other box inverted, a dramatic pattern emerges. To me it is reminiscent of chromosomal strands of tightly wound DNA - another link to the subliminal sexual implications.
The painting was made with Thermafax screens - a technique very similar to silkscreening. The process required over 150 individual paint passes, each hand registered and applied, to create the complete image.
