1944 AEC Matador Timber Tractor “MVS 888”
A vintage 1944 AEC Matador 68.9-CWT conversion timber hauler tractor sits on the property of a family-owned timber company - M.J. Wall & Sons near Ampleforth, North Yorkshire, U.K. The vehicle is fitted with an age-related six-character black plate - “MVS 888”. According to the DVLA this is a 1970 registration which identifies 1970 as the year this vehicle was manufactured. This is likely because the vehicle had been restored, repurposed and re-registered that year. Not sure if the chassis and cab are both original, or this could be a frame-off conversion of fitting the original 1944 cab onto a different chassis. Many of these vehicles built during WWII were purpose-built and put into service as military lorries or were commandeered by local army regiments. Several similar surviving examples of this lorry also have re-registered plates. A source online confirms this was used as an army truck when new. Either way, it is incredible that this 80-year-old veteran is still working!
