Sprites and the city

This was a different sprite-chase. On the early morning of Mar. 11, 2023, a very active line of thunderstorms was moving towards Athens from the NW but in such a way, that I had a clear view over it until it got too close. One example is this capture here.

More than 20 red sprite events were captured and I also got the closest on record, so far for me (“parent” lightning was only some 25-30 km away, so the relevant sprites gave the impression as if they were literally “hanging” above my head). On the other hand, the extreme light pollution from the city and the very bright moon, weren’t helpful at capturing such faint phenomena.

TLEs (like red sprites) appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).

I've used a Sigma 20 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 10k iso.
