The squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides) is a small heron found in warm regions of southern Europe and the Greater Middle East. It measures 44–47 cm (17½–18½ inches) in length, with a compact body of 20–23 cm (8–9 inches) and a wingspan of 80–92 cm (31½–36 inches). During summer, adults develop long neck feathers, enhancing their appearance. These herons breed in marshy wetlands, often nesting in small colonies with other wading birds. They feed on fish, frogs, and insects. In winter, they migrate to Africa.
