Views of the butterfly cage B &W, Trentham Gardens

The Butterflies swarm to Trentham Gardens

All 5,000 vibrant blue ceramic butterflies have landed at Trentham Gardens ready to be placed on the installation that will form ‘Taking Flight.

One by one, the butterflies have been painstakingly placed and planted by dozens of volunteers at Trentham Gardens this week ahead of the unveiling of ‘Taking Flight’ on Friday 24th May.

Inch by inch, the butterflies have taken their places on, alongside and in front of the dome-shaped “cage” – some in swarms, and others gently coming to rest on the dome itself as they catch their breath.

By Wednesday evening, the two wave-like swarms that will dominate 2 sides of the “cage” are starting to take shape, whilst hundreds of butterflies come spilling out from the base of the “cage”. More than half the ceramic butterflies have already found their home on the installation and have been joined by hundreds of stainless-steel butterflies, glinting and sparkling in the bright Spring sunshine.

The next 2 days will see the middle sections of the wave-like swarms being installed along with hundreds more stainless-steel butterflies escaping the “cage” and soaring skywards.

‘Taking Flight’ will be unveiled on Friday 24th May and will enjoy its temporary home in the upper flower garden at Trentham Gardens until 3rd November 2019.
