Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) gather as a community at Tentena, Lake Poso, Sulawesi, Indonesia
As an educator training people in peacebuilding, it was a privilege to work with people of many different cultures and from many different conflicts.
During the first decade of this century there was intense and widespread conflict across Indonesia. One of the most intensive conflicts occurred in central Sulawesi where massacres, assassinations, arson, terror bombings and displacement on a large scale occurred.
In order to train peacebuilders, it is necessary to be on the ground to understand the roots of the conflict, directions and positions of those involved and to know the communities who are enmeshed in the conflict.
This group was made up of Christian people who were displaced and who had fled to a majority Christian area during the intense Islam/Christian conflict in Poso City and surrounds.
To hear of their experiences, anguish and hopes was certainly motivational for those who were in a position to contribute to achieving a just and sustainable peace, or to ensuring communal healing from trauma could be facilitated.
