Vicky Friend
Psychologically Me
This is a self-portrait inspired by techniques used by the artist Lucian Freud. I used acrylic paint on an A1 canvas for this piece. I researched Freud as an artist and discovered that his approach to portraiture changed over time. As he took influence from those around him, Freud’s impasto thickened and his mark making became more free and expressive. This is evident when you compare his early and later works. I experimented with this and chose a middle ground for this self-portrait. I tried not to blend the colours too much and used lots of paint on my brush. If I was to do this again, I would work more quickly to avoid spending too long getting the tones correct in my face. I think it really needed to be more expressive but considering this was my first time using a canvas, I was happy with the final product.
