Minneriya national park is an important habitat for large water birds such as lesser adjutant, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican, as well as for many resident and migrant bird species. Little cormorants, great white pelicans, ruddy turnstones, and grey herons are other water birds frequently spotted here. Among the endemic birds are Sri Lanka junglefowsl, Sri Lanka hanging parrost, brown-capped babblers, Sri Lanka grey hornbills, black-crested bulbuls and crimson-fronted barbets.
