HABIBA RA HARMACHIS AT SAQQARA SHCM
This is a Pharaoh Hound. They originate from Gozo on Malta where they are known as Kelb tal Fenek. Like many breeds scattered around The Mediterranean (Ibizan, Pondenco and Cirneco dell'Etna) they all share similar characteristics which have evolved on different types of terrain. They very closely resemble the tjesm, the red hunting dog found in Ancient Egypt and these hounds are believed to have been traded by the Phoenicians in antiquity but whether from Egypt to Malta or Malta to Egypt is not clear however very early paintings in the Nile valley before pharaonic times show hunting dogs of similar size with prick ears indicating similar hounds existed in Egypt over 4,000 years ago.
