London established one of the first underground railroad networks in the world in 1863. It was called "The Metropolitan" and consisted of a steam engine system that ran through a series of small tunnels beneath the city. Unfortunately, the lack of proper ventilation caused the smoke from the steam engines to fill the tunnels, leading to poor visibility and hazardous breathing conditions.
