St.Paul 1965 Record Flood

Left to right, CB&Q Dayton's Bluff, Milw Pig's Eye Yd& Rdhse center. Right, CGW Belt Yd left side of flood wall, corner of old Shiely Cement plant. Foreground ,right, CB&Q Burlington Hotel/Lunch. North LaCrosse crews tied up there,a short walk from yd office up a staircase under Warner Rd. Q Lunch was open to public with good chow. Just to right behind tree is CGW Belt Tower. With warning, cars and electrical gear, were moved to higher ground. Only tower not under was Newport. All regular schedules were annulled and tower padlocked for about two weeks. NCL,EB Zephyrs combined Mpls to Chicago via CNW Hudson. Ditto Milw Hiawatha, mail, Pioneer Ltd service. Railway Transfer under GN Station came in handy there. See Hiawatha Rails site for shots of that. CGW Robert St. lift bridge was in danger from St.Paul Yacht Club(a large wood structure just upstream on Harriet Island) was starting to float loose. U.S. Army Corps of Engrs dynamited it to smithereens. CNW Western Ave Bridge 15 was weighted down with junk hoppers full of rip-rap. It held. This view looking Southeast towards Newport.
