Old Chicago Great Western Lift

A most photographed bridge, mostly with train. CGW(CNW-UP) Robert St. vertical lift span,St.Paul,MN. This view shows the full lift position, affording a view of the old AmericanHoist&Derriick Plant.(Served by RI from spur on South side). CGW State St,Yd is down around to the left. SPUD is directly to the left of concrete bridge. Trivia: now imagine motorcycle riding over that arch. Has been known to happen back in the day. Also under CGW ownership, the bridge tender house was painted in standard CGW depot colors. Then this scheme, then all gray. During 1965 flood, water was up above the piers and lapping the girders. The old St.Paul Yacht Club,a large wood structure threatened bridge. US Army Corps of Engrs dynamited it to smithereens. A good group of folks turned out to watch.
