Spaunton Moor - Ain Howe Cross 2025

Ana Cross history involves a prehistoric burial mound and the site of a medieval waymarker and potentially a sanctuary cross on Spaunton Moor. Originally named Ain Howe Cross, the original Norman cross was likely tall but the current 1949 cross is a reconstruction of a C19th cross that replaced it. The top of the original medieval cross is preserved in the crypt of Lastingham Church.

The site lies about 1 km SSE of the top of Rosedale Chimney Bank and overlooks the Spaunton Moors. It marks an historic route between Lastingham and Rosedale Priory, with a hollow way still visible to the west of the mound.
