Down St Tunnel
In London's Mayfair, Down Street was a working underground station for a short while from 1907.
The station was deemed critical in the effort to win the Second World War when it became the headquarters of the Railway Executive Committee. Prime Minister Winston Churchill took refuge here for a short while during the Blitz.
Having visited the tunnels I found myself questioning not the necessity in keeping the railways working but the relative luxury the committee enjoyed - excellent food and fine wines when people above ground were struggling so much.
