Van Hool T818 Astron Advert
The Van Hool T818 Astron was a member of the Van Hool T8 family. The Astron was a 12-metre mid-engined 11.88-metre tall deck and a half Integral coach powered by a 11.41-litre six-cylinder M.A.N. D2566 DUTH turbocharged diesel engine producing 288bhp at 2,200rpm and driving through a ZF HP5OO fully automatic gearbox. I checked Bus Lists On The Web (BLOTW) and only 26 T818 Astron coaches were registered in the UK between 1983 and 1987, Flights of Birmingham took five making them the largest single customer for the Astron. Checking my Coachmart vehicle supplement magazine from 1985 lists the price for a standard Astron as £98,300 (ex VAT). The T818 Astron (CH49/7Dt) in the advert was registered A778 TMA.
