Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II extended wheelbase

To follow on from the photograph I posted of the Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I was launched in 1955 which replaced the Silver Dawn. The Silver Cloud II was launched in 1959 retaining the same body as the Cloud I, but was powered by the completely new 6.2-litre all aluminium overhead valve V8 L Series engine with twin S.U. carburettors, no official powerout was ever quoted by Rolls-Royce, it is estimated to be 185bhp (6230cc). The engine was mated to a four-speed fully-automatic General Motors gearbox. Like all Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars built at Crewe before the launch in 1965 of the Silver Shadow, were available as a chassis to be bodied by the customer's chosen coachbuilder. The Bentley S2 was based on the Silver Cloud II. The extended wheelbase Silver Cloud was 4 inches longer and had a electrically operated glass divider to separate the rear cabin (if you look closely at the photograph you can see the divider).

It was rumoured that the V8 L Series engine was based on a General Motors engine, this is untrue. The V8 L Series engine would power all Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars from 1959 until the nineties when the BMW V12 engine was used. I understand that Bentley use a V8 engine which can be traced back to the L Series engine.

Production numbers for the Silver Cloud I (1955-1959) 2,359, Silver Cloud II (1959-1962) 2,116, and Silver Cloud III (1962-1966) 2,376.
