Pintura singular y emblemática del modernismo catalán, representa al propio Ramon Casas y a Pere Romeu, amigo y barman de la famosa cervecería Els Quatre Gats, que pedalean en un tándem con la silueta de Barcelona al fondo. La tela decoraba la mencionada cervecería, que se convirtió en el cuartel general de los artistas e intelectuales que habían impulsado el movimiento, así como los de la generación más joven, como Picasso, Mir o Nonell. La finalidad decorativa de esta pintura, su tono humorístico y el estilo acerca «El tándem» a la técnica del cartel, género en el que Ramon Casas había adquirido un gran prestigio. En el año 1901 se sustituyó la tela por otra que representaba a los mismos personajes en coche.
La obra es también una muestra de la influencia que la pintura japonesa (trazo, línea, ausencia de sombras,…) ejerció sobre muchos pintores europeos.

A singular and emblematic painting of Catalan modernism, it represents Ramon Casas himself and Pere Romeu, friend and barman of the famous Els Quatre Gats brewery, who are pedalling in a tandem with the silhouette of Barcelona in the background. The canvas decorated the aforementioned brewery, which became the headquarters of the artists and intellectuals who had promoted the movement, as well as those of the younger generation, such as Picasso, Mir and Nonell. The decorative purpose of this painting, its humorous tone and style brought "The Tandem" closer to the poster technique, a genre in which Ramon Casas had acquired great prestige. In 1901, the canvas was replaced by another that represented the same characters in a car.
The work is also a sample of the influence that Japanese painting (stroke, line, absence of shadows,...) exerted on many European painters.
