20150301 NGC2359 Thors Helmet - Hubble flt
NGC 23592 or 'Thor's Helmet' an emission nebula in Canis Major. The nebula is a ~ 11.96 thousand light years away and is 30 light-years in size.
The central star is the Wolf-Rayet star WR7, an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief pre-supernova stage of evolution. It is similar in nature to the Bubble Nebula, but interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud are thought to have contributed to the more complex shape and curved bow-shock structure of Thor's Helmet. Also catalogued as Sharpless 2-298 and Gum 4. (taken from Wikipedia)
Imaged using a 510mm (20") Planewave CDK f/4.5
FLI-PL6303E CCD camera
20 minutes each Ha, Oiii & Sii
Processed in DSS and PS CS 6 - Hubble Palette Sii (R) Ha (G) Oiii (B)
