Grimburg Castle was built by the archbishops of Trier around 1190 and became the administrative castle for about 40 villages south of Trier. In 1522 the castle was taken by Franz von Sickingen. In later times witch trials took place at the castle area. Since 1978, the intensive efforts of the “Friends of Grimburg Castle“ have awakened the castle from its centuries-long sleep by means of partial reconstruction. Meanwhile, Grimburg Castle has become a popular destination for hikers and a favored place for celebrating marriages.
