Arsenic and old lace.

-The title of Joseph Kesselring's 1941 play titled Arsenic and Old Lace originates from the modus operandi (mode of operation) of sisters Martha and Abby who kill elderly men by lacing their wine with arsenic.

~

the orginal expression was arsenic in old lace, and was to do with the pale faced make up and lavender lace dress style of victorian women, how ever it was also an expression give to children who asked silly questions.

Such as Mum whats for dinner.. the reply

Arsenic and old lace.

But thus far have been unable to find the context for this expression as used by parents.
