The legend of the Black Dog is a common myth in Britain. It’s told in over 10 different parts of Britain and is known by lots of names like:
Black Shuck
Hairy Jack
Padfoot
Churchyard Beast
Bogey Beast
The black dog was a large ghostly dog with glowing red or yellow eyes. It was thought to be a ‘Hellhound’ and linked to the Devil. They were thought to appear at crossroads, barrows (ancient burial sites), or along ancient pathways. While they appeared sinister black dogs could mean different things. Some believed they could be helpful and guide travellers at night. Others believed seeing a black dog was a bad omen and they could be harmful.
The Black Shuck is an East Anglian legend. It tells of a black dog that lurks in the darkest forests, in graveyards and crossroads. It had glowing red eyes and was the size of a calf. The Black Shuck appeared during thunderstorms. In 1577, it was blamed for striking two churches and leaving scorched claw marks on one of the church’s doors.
