Bee Celtic Symbolism
Throughout the Celtic tradition, the Bee was a protected creature. It was from Bee’s honey that people made mead, a drink that appears in Paradise as Nectar of the Gods. Mead was purported to have medicinal qualities.
As in other settings, Bee is also a wise spiritual messenger. When someone died, the farmer was to inform the bees so that they could take the news abroad.
Superstition tells us that when a Bee dances near your window, it portends a guest’s arrival, and one entering the house was a sign of good luck.
In Ireland, people believe you must treat bees respectfully, or they will find a new home. They are, in fact, tiny members of the family who want to be part of all the news.
Druids had a special relationship with trees, Bees and with the Earth at large. Bees were considered sacred to the Goddess. This is likely at least in part because Bees live in matriarchal societies. The Queen Bee representative of the Goddess and Divine Feminine.
Some people in Celtic cultures would chase and try to catch Bees as a way to try to derive messages directly from the Divine. Believing the Bee to be an important being, connected to the Divine and like family, some would converse with Bees and interact with them as if speaking directly to their Ancestors.
Bees were also a reason to be on your best behavior in these traditions, as it was thought that to speak too harshly or to be crass would harm the Bees and impact honey production. People would be protective of the Bees and avoid such offenses at all costs. To do otherwise would be considered bad luck or possibly even bring harm to the individual’s family.
The association between Bees and messages from the divine led the people of Scotland to see Bees as being messengers akin to wise Druids. Scottish lore also tells of a swarm of Bees foretelling Christ’s birth.
It was also believed that when you change consciousness, such as entering a dream state, your Soul would leave your body in the form of Bees.
