Old Method Tin Plate 1 July 1884

W. Gilbertson & Co., Pontardawe Tinplate Works, Near Swansea, Glamorganshire; Tin, Terne and Black Plate Manufacturers. Registered 1 July 1884.

Terne plate was coated with an alloy of 80% lead and 20% tin to rustproof it, being cheaper than using all tin. Today, zinc is used in place of lead. Black plate is cold rolled steel before pickling or cleaning, or else sheet steel coated with lacquer or enamel.

Pontardawe Tinplate Works was founded in 1843 by William Parsons.William Gilbertson leased the works from him in 1861, at which time it comprised nine mills. Today it is the site of Cwmtawe Comprehensive School.
