Lewis' Folly Zezani, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia 1980

During the Commonwealth Ceasefire Monitoring Operation (Op Agila), at an Assembly Point in Matabeleland, a Royal Engineers lieutenant wanted to build an unnecessary bridge over a ditch in the middle of the bush. Despite being told by better counsel that six inch nails would pull out under load, he went ahead. To confound his critics he drove the AP's Rhodesian Army borrowed Mercedes-Benz LA1113 water bowser over the "bridge", instantly collapsing it. After an attempt with three Land Rovers only produced a smell of burning clutches, the ZANLA PF guerrillas at the AP used more traditional methods to recover the stricken vehicle - manpower, and lots of it!
