Button Stick, Brass, 1955

When I joined the army in 1971, I was issued with this button stick manufactured in 1955 and still stamped WD - War Department which preceded the MOD. It was designed to slide under buttons on the uniform so they could be polished without transferring Brasso to the cloth. By my enlistment time, No2 Dress uniforms were fitted with "Staybrite" buttons which did not require polishing. It was still useful for polishing the brass fittings on our blancoed 37 Pattern webbing, especially the buckles on the ankle gaiters. By the time I left the army in 2006, there was a generation of soldiers who did not know what this curious object was.
