Pre-Worboys Road Sign, High Street, Swanage, Dorset 8 October 2018
A pre-Worboys sign on the A351.
The sign was produced by the Royal Label Factory which was established in 1874 with the task of producing metal signs for Queen Victoria's Sandringham Estate. In 1896 it was being run by John Smith, at Stratford-on-Avon. It continued as part of the MPBW and in the 1930s was supplying local authorities with up to half of the signposts and fingerposts in the country. The factory moved to Chipping Norton in 1963 and continued to supply local authorities and construction companies with signs. In 1998 it became part of Leander Architectural of Buxton, maker of blue plaques for civic trusts and societies throughout the UK and signs of all kinds for heritage agencies – e.g. the National Trust, Historic Scotland and Cadw-Welsh Monuments - as well as military memorials.
