WA Baker Post, Beechwood Park, Chepstow Road, Newport 29 September 2018

A redundant cast iron gatepost from the WA Baker Foundry, Newport, in Beechwood Park.

Beechwood Park was opened to the public in 1900, comprising over thirty acres on the eastern side of Newport. The Grade II Listed Beechwood House in the park was built in 1877 for George Fothergill, tobacco importer and one time mayor of Newport. At the park café, "Mrs T's" we were told that although efforts are now being made and some funding is being obtained, the park has suffered by playing second fiddle to Belle Vue Park off Cardiff Road. This is certainly evident in the neglected stream running through the grounds, and the damaged brickwork visible on the pillars of the main entrance. It is nonetheless, a beautiful park with much potential.

WA Baker established the Westgate Works in Newport, Mon, in 1880. In 1938, the Whitehead Iron & Steel Co acquired a controlling interest. In 1957, after several years of close collaboration with the American firm Black Clawson (also seen as Clawsen) International, this firm acquired the works. It is still in operation today, manufacturing machinery for the recycling industry.
