Austro-Hungarian Memorial, Zetra, Sarajevo 1999

In 1999 I was seconded from JACIG for four months as Logistics Officer to the Verification Operations Section (VOS) of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The VOS was responsible for providing in-country support to inspection teams of other nations coming to the Former Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) to conduct arms control inspections under the Dayton Agreement.

On weekends, usually free, I used to wander around the environs and mountains above Sarajevo, having served there during part of my United Nations tour in 1993-4, avoiding areas marked off by yellow mine tape!

Here, a memorial to soldiers of the Imperial and Royal 49th Infantry Regiment, Freiherr von Hess, raised in 1715 and in the late 19th Century, garrisoned in Sarajevo. Probably the Saint Marko Cemetery.
