St Peter ad Vincula, Church Street, Combe Martin, Devon 11 April 2017

Ordinary Seaman William Charles Wilcox of the Royal Navy, HMS Shrapnel. Son of Charles Henry and Eliza Wilcox. Born in Combe Martin in the June Quarter of 1925. Died 1 January 1933 aged 18.

Confusingly, there were several HMS Shrapnels during WW2. Fortunately, the urn on the grave is inscribed on one side with "RNTU Isleworth" which confirms William's establishment as HMS Shrapnel (Isleworth), the former Frazer Nash motor company’s workshops and showrooms, London Road, Isleworth. It was taken over by the RN as a training school for seamen who were to become motor mechanics on small craft like torpedo boats.

The earliest parts of the church date from the 12/13th Centuries. The dedication of the church relates to St. Peter ad Vincula ("St. Peter in Chains") from the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. Various additions and restorations were carried out over the centuries, the last major restoration being in the 1970s.
