Wetherspoon's The Picture House, Market Street, Ebbw Vale 26 October 2016
The Picture House was converted by Wetherspoon's from a supermarket built in 1970 on the site of the former Astoria Cinema which was itself built in 1940. The clock is titled "Echoes" and was executed by Marianne Forrest who also made the seven stainless steel balls around the square. This was all part of a 1.167 million pound regeneration for Ebbw Vale town centre which was badly hit by the closure of the steelworks in 2000. The balls, said to have cost £10,000, have come under fierce criticism from local shoppers and traders, the former claiming they heat up dangerously in hot sunshine, allegedly enough to "fry an egg on", and the latter complaining they take up space which could be occupied by market stalls.
