Refuse Collection, Maendy Way, West Pontnewydd, Cwmbran 20 December 2017

The blight of roadside recycling collection. When we lived in Mid Bedfordshire the council provided a wheelie bin for all recyclables. This was then emptied into a refuse lorry, taken to an indoor depot, and sorted by recycling operators in warmth and comfort. Torfaen CBC, in common with many others, provides boxes to be left out and sorted at the roadside by their litter men. They provide nets to stop rubbish spilling out or being blown about, but of course many householders seem incapable of understanding this concept and pile boxes high with plastic and cans which often end up blowing all over the place. Even if this doesn’t happen, operators themselves often drop the rubbish, frequently ignoring it on the ground. Another side effect in narrow streets is congestion caused by the recycling lorries crawling down the street. In my opinion roadside recycling is inefficient and messy and should be ended.
