This plaque commemorates the disembarkation of four of the Tolpuddle Martyrs following their return in 1838, to England after transportation to Australia, coyly described as "their exile".
The Tolpuddle Martyrs were six farm workers from the village of that name in Dorset. In 1834 they were arrested for swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers; Friendly Societies embraced strong elements of trade union principles. The six were convicted and sentenced to transportation to Australia, to a penal colony, to serve seven years. In 1838, four returned to England..
