Farewell to My Favourite Woodland

Elan Valley, Powys, Wales, UK

I didn't have any intention of ever posting this shot. I took it back in May on a whim as I liked the way the sunlight was shining through the trees. It's a shot my favourite woodland.

We visited the Elan Valley a couple of weeks ago and had intended to stop of there on our way to the Harfod Estate. The road was closed.... I assumed for repairs as it's a bit iffy in places. I have since found out that the road was closed in order to clear the woodland following the identification of Larch Disease. I know it has to happen but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm devastated that this beautiful woodland will be lost. The Elan Valley Estate have committed to replacing it with a mix of conifer and broad leaf trees but this will take time.

UPDATE: So, I visited the Elan Valley last weekend (6/2/22) following the re-opening of the road that passes by this woodland. Whilst it was heartbreaking to see the stumps of the once majestic Douglas Firs, I'm pleased to report that this particular piece of woodland is still intact. The felling stopped approx 50m to the right of this shot.

Farewell to my favourite woodland.
