Deer at Thousand Hills
This photo is of a whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) taken around Thousand Hills State park on 10/24/2019 around 4pm. The ecological concept taking place in this picture is herbivory. Herbivory is the primary way deer get nutrients although they have been seen preying on field mice and injured birds. The primary diet for deer however is mostly berries, leaves from trees, and grass. We see the deer in this picture grazing on a field of grass. At this point in the year, deer are trying to get a storage of energy for the winter. Deer will stay active throughout the winter, but food availability will decline, thus the need to eat a lot before it gets too cold. An additional ecological concept that is not directly seen in this picture is the deer droppings. These pellets provide nutrients for the grass and food for microorganisms.
