A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events

“The Bramwen Willows” is the name of the old stone castle that has been the ancestral home of the titled Abbotte family for generations.

It is located in a forgotten corner of wales, it’s nearest neighbor is the old parish village of St. Mears(not its actual name)on the Lake.

The village’s namesake lake is a long narrow body of water that extends out quite a distance. Said to be haunted, it is stocked with black swans believed to ward off any spirits.

The village's main claim to fame is a fall festival to honour Owain Glyndwr Day.

It’s a large affair bringing people from all over. The wealthy Abbotte family hosts the event, opening all their guest rooms to the wealthiest of participants. It culminates with a large music bash on Saturday evening held at their stately manor.

The Abbottons also host an invite-only reception held at the castle’s spacious main-floor ballroom.

Most of the skeletal security available is centered around the music bash, the Abbottes do manage to employ a guard at the gate to check the hard-to-acquire invites of those entering.

The estate is surrounded by a high fence on three sides, with the village's namesake lake bordering the backside.

Behind the castle are hedged gardens, open to the guests, covering about 1 1/2 hectares. Past the gardens is a path that leads 1/2 kilometre down to the lake. At this point, there is a boat house/gardener's shed. An old style’ Ha-Ha ‘starts here and circles from the lake, lining the nearby pastures.

The path continues around the west side of the lake to the family mourning chapel about 2 kilometers distance. Here is where most of the Abbotte’s long line of ancestors are buried (including the family black sheep, highwayman Craig Abbot).

From the chapel is a paved road leading to Abbot’s Chase, which is the name of the main road leading to and from the village. The stone gate leading into the cemetery is always open, and never guarded, even on Owain Glyndwr Day.

Why would it, All of the castle party guests would be using the main gate to enter, right?

So why, on this particular Owain Glyndwr Day, late on a warm evening, hours into the Abbotte’s castle party, with its heavily jewelled up partying guests, is a small sports coupe extinguishing its headlamps as it is slowly turning off Abbotes Chase Lane onto the road leading to the family chapel?

A mystery indeed!

A mystery that deserves a story.

To be continued…
