Palais Royal (Stage Stores)
Former Palais Royal on Meyerland Plaza Mall in Houston, Texas. This location was unique as not only was it the flagship store for Stage Stores, but several corporate functions were actually based on the second floor.
On May 20, 2020, Stage Stores which operated hundreds of department stores across the country under the Stage, Palais Royal, Bealls, Goody's, and Peebles nameplates along with off-price stores under the Gordmans nameplate announced they had filed for bankruptcy.
The goal at the time was to use the bankruptcy to buy the company time to find a buyer after years of sluggish sales. Initially, managements plan to fix the company was to convert all locations to the Gordmans format, however the COVID-19 outbreak derailed those plans.
After failing to find a buyer that would continue operating the company as a going concern, Stage is currently in the process of liquidating their assets.
It's personally hard seeing the fall of Stage as it was Houston's hometown department store. I grew up shopping at their stores and currently live down the street from their soon to be former headquarters.
