Where the North Begins
Their words, not mine. The North doesn’t truly begin until you cross HWY 29.
Portage, WI serves as the halfway mark between Pig’s Eye in St. Paul and Bensenville, right by O’Hare in Chicago. Almost every CP train that passes through changes crews somewhere in town here, and this town is railroad-centric in almost every way, seeing as there’s nothing else to do. If it weren’t for the railroad, the town would have literally nothing; not even the grain silos behind the signal are active.
The ballast train finally arrives back at home base, where the power will get plucked and the train will sit for the evening. While some KCS SD70MACs would take the train westward, there weren’t any in town at the time, leaving one of the Dash 9s in the foreground and a hidden CSX GEVO to take it instead.
