Shine on, you crazy diamond...
High school football is in high season here in Texas.. I think most people imagine they know what an integral part of life that is here - but you'd probably be wrong. The other ten months of the year are just spent marking the days until the season starts again, and rivalries can be fought, and losses can be avenged on the field. Like the Ford commercial says.. "..it's kind of a big deal..."
Last Friday night, the senior quarterback for one of the fiercest teams in the area threw a touchdown, jogged smiling a huge grin over to the sideline, and collapsed.. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was fine when he was congratulated by the coach for another successful drive - and ten minutes later he was gone...
It doesn't make any sense, the way we can be here one minute, and the next - gone. We spend our lives planning and saving for retirement, and all the while, the actuarial tables tick away the days. We assume we're going to live to be a hundred - but the truth is, it's a rare bird that makes it that far. So don't hold any grudges, assuming you can make it up later. Don't waste your life waiting for something better to come along.. Make whatever is going on in your life a GOOD thing - relish it.. It may be all you ever get - and it's probably a lot more than some people will ever have..
