179/365 - is that all there is..?
365 - The 2010 Edition - June 28, 2010
When I was growing up, (hundreds of years ago...) - things were so different.. Our lives were so much slower-paced, and young people today probably would think they would be bored out of their minds without 250 TV channels, a radio station on every single frequency, a game console or two or three, internet connectivity at their fingertips, and world-wide calling privileges.. What would they do without an MP3 player with a million songs in their pocket, and Skype conversation with a friend on the other side of the planet?
Sad to say - with all that stimulation - slash - "entertainment" - I don't think we're one bit more entertained.. It reminds me of the way our children are robbed of the joy of receiving gifts through sheer overload.. The more we give them - the more we get - the less we appreciate it. The anticipation and gratification is lost in the constant urge for more and more - just the way an addict needs more and more to get that high. It just keeps spiraling up and up, until there's no joy in any of it anymore, and we're left with is that jaded feeling..."is that all there is?"...
"Is That All There Is" - by Peggy Lee
SPOKEN:
I remember when I was a very little girl, our house caught on fire.
I'll never forget the look on my father's face as he gathered me up
in his arms and raced through the burning building out to the pavement.
I stood there shivering in my pajamas and watched the whole world go up in flames.
And when it was all over I said to myself, "Is that all there is to a fire"
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
SPOKEN:
And when I was 12 years old, my father took me to a circus, the greatest show on earth.
There were clowns and elephants and dancing bears.
And a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our heads.
And so I sat there watching the marvelous spectacle.
I had the feeling that something was missing.
I don't know what, but when it was over,
I said to myself, "is that all there is to a circus?
SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
