"Let the waters settle. You will see stars and moon mirrored in your being."
(Rumi)
It almost looks as though the egret is admiring his or her reflection in the water - until it launches that sharp, black stiletto of a beak into the water and plucks dinner out..
I watched a nature show some time ago where they set up large mirrors, and filmed the reactions that different species had on seeing their reflections in the mirror. Interesting..
But I suspect that humans are the only ones who reflect on their lives, on mistakes they've made, or opportunities taken or missed. I'm even surer that we are the only species likely to see moon and stars reflected in our being. And we are definitely the only species to write such poetic reflections down on paper..
Don't you think that's odd? What sparked that part of our brain that allows us to think about the future, the past, and how the the world around us came to be.. I wonder..
