in the eye of the storm...

Doves were flying like paper bags caught in the wind, as they hurried to find a safe place to pass the storm. The drooping branches of the mimosa tree thrashed about, and bent upwards, till they looked like they were raising their arms to the heavens.. "Have mercy on us!" they seemed to plead.

But nature has no mercy. Because nature is not a living thing. Only living beings have the capacity to be merciful. And if you're paying attention, you'll notice that there is very little mercy in the plants and animals that together comprise 'nature'.

The hawk has no mercy, as it crushes the life out of the sparrow, and begins ripping it to shreds. The shark has not one whit of compassion for the seal it catches, just as the seal ate the fish, that ate the minnow, who snapped up the larvae, that fed on the plankton..

Humans have the capacity to feel empathy, compassion, and love. So do lots of mammals, actually.. Apes and elephants, dolphins and puppies.. It seems that most mammals have the innate ability to form a family that protects their young, and shows tenderness at least to it's own. Maybe it's a warm-blooded thing...
