THE CHURCH OF THE MARRIED
SDC-4478
Our Sanctuary is known as the "church of the spouses". On the left side, next to the main altar, is the stupendous altar of the Madonna, the work of Martino Bassi, built in the years 1584-1588. In the center stands the Assumption, a masterpiece by Annibale Fontana, known as the "Madonna degli sposi". According to a long tradition, after having celebrated the sacrament of marriage in the parish, the spouses used to come in large numbers to the Shrine - and they still come today - to bring flowers to the Madonna, to pray to her full of trust and hope and to receive her blessing. A very simple but touching meeting, consisting of a personal prayer, the gift of the bouquet and the blessing given by the priest. Even today it is easy to meet in the Sanctuary spouses who remember that day with emotion and couples who return specifically to renew their entrustment to the Virgin on the occasion of wedding anniversaries.
