Inside Milan - C - 274
Cassino Scanasio is a name that probably tells you little. It is a fraction of the municipality of Rozzano. We are in the province south of Milan
But Cassino Scanasio is worth a visit: in fact, here it is possible to see a castle. There are several you know in the province? And this is really worth a ride.
The west ring road at the time of the first writings about the Castle obviously was not there: we are talking about 1034. Two quick accounts and soon we could celebrate 1000 years. What we certainly know is that Barbarossa stopped here and, together with the Cremona army, prepared to attack Milan, except that the Milanese, flooding the fields around here, forced the Emperor to move to Lacchiarella.
And the Castle of Cassino Scanasio was there, ready to perform the only function for which it was built: defense. Of course, there are also tales about the fact that the good Bernabò Visconti created here the umpteenth estate for his dogs, but we know that legend and history in these cases are inexorably mixed.
What we certainly know is that the Castle of Cassino Scanasio, at least as we see it today, is more recent, if we can say so, since it is the work of the Visconti who, due to the fact of having others closer to Milan, considered this castle as a sort of transit station towards Pavia.
The castle of Cassino Scanasio still shows us its defensive character today, a sort of outpost for the control of the territory. Unfortunately there is nothing historical inside: today it is a private house and what was inside (although we know that it has never been as rich in ornaments as its neighbors in the duchy) is no longer visible.
